FLAMING VIKING TOURS
FOR "STRAIGHT BUT NOT NARROW" TOURS VISIT
My name is Alex Volk, and I am the owner of Flaming Viking Tours. I was born and raised in Kansas City to German Irish parents. My mom’s side are drunks and my father’s side like keeping things in order (Alles in Ordnung!). So I used to drink lots of whiskey in a very orderly fashion.
I get my sense of humor from my mom who used to say, “There’s an asshole around every corner.” I orginally thought this quite cynical, but after I came out as gay, I find it offers a message of hope.
I worked as a stand-up comedian before becoming a Qualified Stockholm Guide and tour leader. Much of my material came from growing up gay with a gynecologist father who like to talk (sometime with visual aids (!) at dinner. I have a background in the Classics, Anthropology and German.
In 1995, I moved to Sweden and became naturalized in 2002. I speak fluent Swedish, and I adore living in Stockholm. My husband Staffan and I have been together 20 year and have gotten married three times. Practice makes perfect and third time a charm. We have two cats, Sixten and Septimus.
I put together the gay tours and brought Veerle onboard for Europride in Stockholm because she is awesome and I love working with her.
My name is Veerle Schrovens, and I am originally from Belgium. Alex and I have over 20 years experience working in tourism. One of the important lessons I got from doing these tours is that, as a guide, I should be representing everyone’s history. In my “regular” tours, I have started including bits I learned from these tours about LGTB history and well as adding more history from often overlooked groups.
I have a background in Sinology, and I also work as a rooftop guide here in Stockholm.
I love to travel and spend most of my free time abroad. My favorite quote is, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel do not get past the first page.”
I recently got adopted by a neighborhood cat.
